So, are you happy with the result? I think most of us are pretty pleased that Cochran won it, yes? It makes for a great story - guy watches show since he's 13... writes a thesis on Survivor for Harvard Law School.... plays Survivor once and gets the boot early... gets to play again and wins the whole thing. Plus, he's a huge, but totally likable nerd whose skin is translucent and was afraid to take off his shirt in front of girls the first time he played. Right? It's TV! You can't write this stuff. Oh, wait....
Anyway, poor Erik made a quick exit as he got med-evaced out. Poor dude was so hungry he started getting dizzy spells. The medics decided that some rest, food and IV fluids would be better for him than going back to camp, so off he went. You gotta feel sorry for the guy. He'd played a good game. He made it as far as he did last time. It's just his thing. And he wins for the character who most resembles a muppet... that hair! (Not sure which muppet, though. Maybe more of a Fraggle...) Anyway, it was also the only time in the game where non-stupid Eddie showed up. Eddie, who's a firefighter/EMT in real life, kicked into gear and helped explain to Erik what was going on and what the medics where doing. It was like a smart person took over his brain.
Which brings me to my absolute favourite part of the show.... Where Eddie tells us that if he wins, he's planning to start a bar with a penned in area for dogs... so you can take your dogs to the bar. Why? Because he loves dogs... and he loves going to the bar. Geez, why haven't they thought of that yet for kids?
So it all shook out that Cochran, the challenge monster, won the reward challenge (which was anyone's game... it was building a house of cards while balancing the whole thing with one hand... everyone sucked at it and had to start over about 7 times.) so won a reward of an advantage in the final challenge. For the final challenge, the players had to race up steps and untie bags of puzzle pieces, only Cochran's didn't need to be untied. However, it took him so long to start the puzzle, he almost wasted the advantage entirely. But then, 'cause he's a smarty pants, he flew through the puzzle and won final immunity.
Who to pick? Dawn or Eddie? He ended up picking Dawn to go to the final three with him and Sherri... a no-brainer. Literally. And we were all a bit worried, right? Well, he knew better than we did. Dawn was the right choice. She got eviscerated by the jury for all her emotional outbursts, her paranoia, and her moves like voting out Brenda. Cochran gave an amazing opening statement - pretty much said that yeah, he made moves to vote people out, but it wasn't about who he liked or didn't like, it was about making moves at the right time in the game. He kept it on an intellectual, not emotional level. Sherri, on the other hand, started off by stating what as successful business owner she was....pretty much making everyone on the jury laugh... which was a little mean, but really Sherri, how do you not know you got brought along?
This became a theme. People either ignored Sherri completely, or else laid into her for not understanding that she was brought along just for her vote. It's a bit disappointing in the end because she started off with a lot of promise I thought, but once she moved over to Stealth R Us, she never was able to make any moves to solidify her as a player. And if you're going to play the game of being brought along for the ride - which is a legit strategy in its own right - then you have to own it and be able to defend it. Sherri wasn't even aware. Erik especially tore her a new one.
Which brings me to this observation: you never really know how the jury members are going to act, which is part of what makes this show so delightful. It's always the ones who were so nice all along that end up going off. This time it was Erik and Brenda. Last season, remember Malcolm being a jerk to Denise? Yup, true story.
Brenda - for good reason - lost it on Dawn. We've gone through this before. Dawn broke the girl code. I think Jeff put it well when he said that when Brenda found Dawn's teeth, it was like saying, "I've got your back no matter what." Then, she got backstabbed in a way that seemed extra mean, even for this show. So yeah, I can understand why she was pissed. However, asking Dawn to take out her teeth to prove to her that she would have stayed in the game even had she not found the teeth... a bit over the line maybe? (Dawn did comply, by the way.) It was weird. And good. And uncomfortable. Everything a good Survivor jury moment should be.
Otherwise... some other good moments include Phillip telling Cochran he's proud of him and that he's a class act, Andrea being super nice and gracious to everyone, and Reynold (or was it Eddie? See, I still can't separate them) wondering if Cochran would go out for a beer with the 3 amigos. (And their dogs?) Cochran gave the right answer - of course I'd go for beer, and I'll have a woman on each side of me, just like I do right now. Yup, it was perfect. He played a perfect game. Even better, I'd say, than Boston Rob.
Which brings us to the vote and the Reunion Show. Jeff walked out of the jungle and into CBS studios and the vote was unanimous for Cochran. Then the reunion. Weird, right? They didn't talk to the pre-jury Survivors AT ALL. They were all there in the audience sitting together, but they didn't get to be on stage and they didn't get asked any questions. Which is odd. Did anyone notice whether Baby Hantz was there? I didn't notice... may have to research. My theory is that the producers didn't want to talk to Baby because we all know how that would go. All of a sudden you've got a 2-hour show. Or a fist fight. So maybe they just said, you know, we're not going to talk to ANY of the pre-jury people. Makes sense. But it's a bit odd to ignore two major storylines of the season.... Shamar and Baby. And even Fransquestra, who was voted out first for the second time. Normally that would warrant at least a quick question. But no... instead we had to hear from Boston Rob (kind of funny as he presented Philip with an actual book called the Boston Rob Handbook) and Rudy (from season ONE!) and Richard Hatch, who is apparently out of jail. That ended with Rudy (who is 85 I think) saying, "Awww, I didn't even get to call him a queer..." which seemed pretty... ummm... awkward for Jeff. Oh, and then we get to interview some 12 year-old kid in the audience... instead of TALKING TO THE ACTUAL CAST OF THE SHOW!!! Annoying, CBS. The person who wasn't there was Brenda, because she revealed she's super pregnant and due any moment (now there's some good live TV). Via satellite, she sort of accepted Dawn's sort of apology. Yay?
At any rate, the season was great, the reunion show, not so much. Next season, they're calling it Blood vs. Water and not telling us much more about it. What do you think? Obviously it's something to do with family members. Is it family of previous Survivors? Is it where one family member is on one tribe and the other is on another tribe? I'm glad they're trying something new again and keeping it fresh. I'm glad Jeff is coming back for a 27th season (seriously.) and I'm glad you all take the time to read this nonsense that I write. Thanks again for hanging out with me for another season. I will miss you.

Killed By Niceness
OK, Survivor fans, I'm having a bit of a Survivor problem. If you've read this for a while, you know that I'm all about playing the game for the game and not about "morally" playing the game, or who "deserves" to win or who "played with integrity", blah blah blah. On the other hand, voting Brenda out last night was harsh. It was mean. Was it a good move? Remains to be seen.... But mean! And blindsides are usually great, right? This one made me feel a little dirty to watch. This one held no satisfaction. This one was just sad.
Here's how it went down:
It was the family episode. Did you cry? I did. I bawl every single time. For real. I'm a total sucker for this stuff. I mean, it's not like they've been away from their families for years, right? It's not like they're in the freakin' gulag. And it's like, day 36... they're going home soon. But, still, every time those family videos are shown and then the moms/dads/brothers/sisters/husbands/wives/kids run out of the jungle and into the Survivors' arms, it's pretty much IMPOSSIBLE not to get a little teary. If you don't, you may be made of cardboard. You might want to check into that. Even my ex-boyfriend Jeff Probst got teary-eyed when Brenda met up with her dad and told him that she's been following his advice to be humble. (Which, by the way, did her in in the end. Way to go, dad!) (Kidding.) Jeff said it's the first time in 26 seasons that he's broken... What the hell, Jeff? Perhaps he checked into that whole "made of cardboard" thing. See? Or perhaps he's more human now that he has a daytime talk show?
Anyway... Brenda & her dad kicked butt at the challenge and won. It was pretty cute, her telling her dad how proud of him she was. Then there was Dawn & her hubby telling each other "I love you" WHILE they were running... and Cochran's mom, who pretty much just walked the challenge and used the time to catch up with Cochran. So cute. And every time I say how much the family challenge humanizes the Survivors and makes them not just characters on a show, but real people with families who love them. You almost wish you could have seen the families of some of those other guys... like Philip, or Julia, or Malcolm's oddball brother again...
As expected, Brenda got to pick one other Survivor and their loved one to go on a reward BBQ with her. She chose her closest ally, Dawn and her hubby. Yay, right? Wrong. In a cruel Survivor twist, it was revealed that each person got a second loved one to be there. And Brenda was told she could give up the reward for her & Dawn and give the reward instead to the other four losers... erm, competitors, and their families. She didn't have to think about it long, she chose to give up the reward.
Dawn was particularly choked about this. She didn't get to see her husband & one of her twelve kids (I don't know how many she has... I think it's a lot.) and she also didn't get to have the 'glory' of being the saviour who gave everyone the reward. But instead of just sucking it up and maybe being gracious to Brenda for picking her in the first place (and let's face it, she probably would have done the same thing....) she instead cried, pouted and was generally miserable. Brenda (who also didn't get to see her own family or eat great food) had to talk her up. And let's go over this again... it's day 36. You're going home shortly. You'll be OK.
Then there was the immunity challenge. It was an endurance one, which we know Brenda excels at. It was down to Brenda & Dawn. The plan, as far as Brenda was aware, was to just beat Eddie and then vote him out. So Dawn tries to make a deal with Brenda - let me have the immunity. I've never won one. Brenda initially says no, but then falls in the water. She tells us later that she meant to fall in the water to give the immunity to Dawn - her closest ally, let's remember - and keep her happy instead of paranoid and crazy. Seems like a good plan, right? Wrong. The lesson here is NEVER EVER EVER give up immunity.
All of a sudden, Cochran spearheads the idea to get rid of Brenda because she's a huge threat who's just done a super nice thing to garner herself favour from the jury. On paper, he's right. Brenda is a huge threat in challenges. Cochran gets Sherri to go along (like that's difficult) and then talks to Dawn about it. Dawn talks about playing her own game vs. going Cochran's way, as that did her in last time. And what did she do? She went Cochran's way and voted for Brenda. Erik, by the way, voted Eddie with Brenda. Eddie, forever clueless, voted Erik. Brenda got up, stunned and said, "That hurts," and left, crying. And it wasn't that sort of crying where you feel like, oh come on now, you got voted out fair & square. It hurt ME. I felt Brenda's pain. She had totally just taken one for the team. She had trusted Dawn. Dawn, especially, who had wailed for Brenda when her stupid teeth fell out. Remember? Brenda got them for her and Dawn said she'd never write Brenda's name down. And again... here's where I'm having trouble with my own viewpoint on this game... It isn't about friends or warm-fuzzies. It's about winning a million dollars. But, still, voting out Brenda AT THAT TIME was a total dick move.
And here's the thing. Everyone knows it's a dick move. At the end of the day, people do have to respect your game and it's going to be tough to talk your way out of that one. Sherri... well whatever. Cochran can maybe talk his way out of it because he'll talk about making the right strategic move at the right time. Dawn... I don't think she can get out of this one. You can't backstab your bestie and get away with it. Well, OK, Boston Rob did it, but that's Boston Rob. Dawn is not Boston Rob. Erik, on the other hand, was not a part of this vote. I'm still on Erik or Cochran to win. Erik has played an almost perfect game. Cochran's was close, but he's a good talker and people love a good story. Eddie... well hopefully they know he's actually a bit of a threat if he gets to the end, right? Do they not get this? Eddie has pals on the jury: Reynold, Malcolm and Andrea. Those three votes could be yours if you get rid of Eddie, so why not get him out first, then Brenda? (Well, I know, it's because Brenda is morel likely to win immunity than Eddie, but still, it saves you from looking like a backstabbing jerk.)
It remains to be seen. And I need to get my head around this.
Don't forget the finale is on Sunday. While we're at it, can we talk about having the finale every year on Mother's Day, CBS? What is up with that? That's a dick move, too.
Here's how it went down:

The Double Whammy!
When it's getting close to the end of the season and they've started with extra cast members, they have to pull out the Double Whammy. That's where TWO Survivors get voted out in one episode. It's very exciting.
Whammy #1:
Instead of a reward challenge, the Survivors were told it would be an immunity challenge, with a reward. They had to stand out on the water on what basically looked like a submerged dog house. It was windy and it looked tough. Immunity was at stake as well as a clue (the reward) to a hidden immunity idol. In addition, my former boyfriend Jeff Probst pulled out the stops with little food enticements along the way. Erik and Eddie were the first to cave with a plate of donuts. Seriously, does anyone watch this game? I mean, Erik's pretty safe, but Eddie? Eddie is not safe at all and yet is willing to not even try to win a million dollars, opting instead for donuts. Now, I'm a big fan of deep-fried dough myself, but think of how many donuts you could buy with a million bucks... Dumb. Later, Eddie would say that he knew he couldn't hold on anyway, so he figured he might as well get some sustenance.
Cochran would do the same for hot dogs and a coke. Now, Cochran is pretty safe. He knows this and also is very hungry. But if I'm the girls left behind (Dawn, Andrea & Brenda were all still standing at this point) to fight off Reynold, I'd be a little pissed that my teammates are bolting for food when the common goal has yet to be achieved. Thankfully for them, Reynold - after a few absolutely magnificent saves - did fall off the dog house. As did Dawn. After that, it doesn't really matter, right? Brenda and Andrea should have made a deal for the clue and Brenda SHOULD have jumped in the water, letting Andrea have the immunity. This would get her the reward and make her a friend. But nope, Brenda decided she would "rather lose than step off." OK, admirable I suppose, but don't you want to conserve your strength? Andrea ended up winning anyway and they had to stand out there in the heat for something like 4 hours. Jeff just wanted to get this thing over with and get his mai tai on, I'm thinking.
Andrea got the same clue that Malcolm had read the episode before and shared it with her alliance, who all helped her look. Erik dug it up (saying, "I'm from a family of diggers." What? Seriously? Are your family moles? Meerkats? Miners? I need to know now.) and kindly handed the idol over to Andrea. Which, really was the right thing to do since she shared the clue and she was literally a foot away from Erik when he found it. Cochran thought Erik should keep it... and had he been Boston Rob, he probably would have, but he'd have lost a couple of jury votes for sure. Erik's playing the nice ice cream scooper card for sure.
So, no chance of fining an idol, Reynold knows he's hooped. And yes, he got voted off. A no-brainer, really. Reynold is a threat at challenges and he's a smarty pants. Eddie... not so much. To Reynold's credit, he is not that bummed about getting voted off and takes it super graciously. Reynold, I will admit, grew on me. Eddie... not so much.
So now it's down to the (former?) Stealth R Us folks plus Sherri and Eddie. People are starting to think about the final three. If I'm these guys, I'm thinking Sherri and Eddie are looking pretty good as people to take to the final three. Eddie might have a vote from Malcolm and Reynold, though... maybe. Sherri is awesome for going as far as she has, but she's delusional if she thinks it's because of anything except her vote. She's not controlling the game at all. Mind you, I will say Sherri must be playing one hell of a social game because she seems to be everyone's best friend. Have you noticed this? She's smarter than she's been getting credit for, editing-wise.
Whammy #2:
Andrea wants to start targeting strong members of her own alliance and Brenda's whole "I won't jump off the dog house" (not an actual quote) thing makes Andrea think she's a pretty big threat. Plus, she knows that Brenda is also everyone's best friend. Brenda - who I'm pretty sure was a bit of a beeyatch last time she played, right? - is playing the nice card as well as Erik... oh, and Dawn... and Sherri.... and Cochran. Andrea is playing pretty hard, though, pushing her strategy on everyone while having the idol. No one likes that. So, they come up with a pretty ingenious plan to make Andrea positive that yes, they're all going to blindside Brenda, when in fact the plan was to blindside Andrea. She did not see it coming and she did not play her idol. They threw some votes Eddie's way, just in case she did play it. Eddie and Andrea voted for Brenda. It was a perfectly executed blindside. Sigh.... these make me so happy.
Now it looks like Cochran is going to have to watch his back because everyone knows what an awesome game he's been playing. And Eddie is a free vote, remember, so things could get pretty interesting from here out. Also, next show is the family visit show, so get ready and prepare your box of tissues!!
